Savannah Grace: Three Ways To Defeat The Beast Of NaNoWriMo

October 29, 2017

Guess what, writer. There’s a large and terrifying creature lurking just outside your doorstep, and its name is NaNoWriMo. Every writer will probably face this monster sometime in their lives – the monster that will die once you write 50,000 words in the month of November. Does it sound like an impossible task? Well, I’m here to tell three things that can help you defeat that beast of NaNoWriMo. (National Novel Writing Month!)

The beast of NaNoWriMo fears preparation. Storyboards, plotlines, and character arcs are all brilliant weapons to have at your disposal. If you don’t have some form of preparation before November 1st springs upon us (and it’s coming faster than you’d think!) you’re going to be in some pretty hot water. Consider preparation your trusty lightsaber against Darth Vader (aka NaNoWriMo). But that lightsaber isn’t going to do much all by itself, is it? So you’ll need something else, too.

Writers, you all need a story to write during NaNoWriMo. Everyone knows that. But your preparation-lightsaber isn’t going to work against Darth Vader unless you have a passion for your story. Write the story that your heart is telling you to write! Write the story that your muse screams to you at midnight! Passion is a huge part of making it to the 50k goal in November – it’ll keep you chugging along towards that finish line. Passion is The Force that helps you defeat Darth Vader with your wonderful lightsaber of preparation. Although … you do need one more thing …

Do you honestly think Luke Skywalker could have done anything if it hadn’t been for Leia and Han and the rest? Nope – and neither can you (even if you have an epic Lightsaber of Preparation and the strongest Force of Passion.)! Find yourself a posse that will do word wars with you, and motivate you to get up and keep going on those days when you’re wondering why you ever chose to be a writer. A group of writer-friends is invaluable (and, in my opinion, not optional) during NaNoWriMo.

And during the five minutes it probably took you to read this post, the Darth Vader of NaNoWriMo has crept just a little closer. Writer, I hope you’re ready. We can conquer that NaNo monster together. <3

Good luck to all of you participating!

  2. I keep meaning to find my lightsaber of Preparation... but since NaNo starts TOMORROW, I've left it a bit late?? I'll have to make up for it with passion and posse :)

    Lovely post, Savannah!
